Acupuncture:
is contraindicated for the following:
- Blood borne infections & blood clotting disorders.
- Acupuncture will not be performed on anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Acupuncture will not be done on anyone who is under the age of 16, unless accompanied by an individual who has parental rights and responsibilities in respect of that child and who has also given their consent, to the acupuncture, in writing.
Reactions & Risks: For most patients, an acupuncture treatment is relaxing and restful, leaving them slightly tired but with no significant side effects. However you should be aware of the following risks that may be associated with acupuncture and consider these before giving consent for the procedure: Allergic reaction to needles or an infection/swelling/trauma at the punctured site.
Occasionally you may feel light headed, or nauseous during or just after your treatment. Occasionally a blood capillary is punctured during a treatment and when the needle is removed there will be a small amount of blood released, which may cause a bruise at the site of the acupuncture, this shouldn’t be anything to worry about and should go away over the course of a week.
Acupuncture around the thorax can be beneficial however there is an increased risk of a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). If you experience any severe pains in the chest, or difficulty breathing during your treatment, please inform your acupuncturist immediately, if this happens after your treatment, please go straight to the hospital.
Most treatments in this clinic are done on the limbs of the body.
After Care, what to do after your treatment: Since you may feel slightly tired after treatment we recommend you rest well, keep yourself hydrated, avoid heavy exertion, large meals and very hot baths for the rest of the day. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol before and after acupuncture. Please keep any areas of the body that have had acupuncture clean and dry. If this aftercare advice is not followed, an acupuncture site may be at risk of becoming infected.
Massage: On the whole Massage is very safe or can be adapted to most presenting conditions. However I can't treat you if you have an active infection present including fever, colds, flu & contageous diseases, skin conditions, sunburn, acute injuries, open wounds or if you are under the influence of drugs (including pain reducing medications) or alcohol.
In some cases I will require you to have your GP's permission prior to coming in for a massage: Heart conditions, Oedema, High Blood Pressure, Cancer, Epilepsy, Diabetes, Osteoperosis or any condition that you are under the care of your GP. If you are recovering from surgery please wait at least 6 weeks prior to coming for a massage or obtain your GP's consent prior to attending.

Cupping:
Not to be carried out on those with a weak constitution or with blood clotting disorders. A side effect I have experienced is that you may wish to sleep afterwards, or if not straight away then later on towards the evening you may have a large energy dip and need to go to sleep, following this you should wake fully refreshed. Please wrap up warm and avoid any cool draughts afterwards.
Gua Sha:
Like Cupping, Gua Sha should not be carried out on those with a weak constitution, or with blood clotting disorders. Again a side effect I have experienced is that you may wish to sleep afterwards, or if not straight away then later on towards the evening you may have a large energy dip and need to go to sleep, following this you should wake fully refreshed. Please wrap up warm and avoid any cool draughts afterwards.
