Gua Sha, also known as Gua Sha Massage, is similar to Cupping, instead of cups other tools are used to gently scrape/glide over the skin, separating the skin from the fascia (fibres) underneath to allow free movement of our circulation systems. Usually a “sha” (a healthy pinkish flush of colour) will appear, this generally disappears in minutes. Occasionally “petechiae” (bruising) are formed, which should disappear over 3 to 5 days. Petechiae indicate that the area is or has been injured or needs some attention due to lack of circulation which can lead to, stiffness, lack of movement and discomfort. This treatment can be initially slightly uncomfortable over the sore areas.
Here at Copper Woman I use tools made of Copper, Jade, plastic or bone however some Chinese households use the rounded edges of spoons, some people even use jam jar type lids to do this treatment at home.
Benefits: Breaks down any areas of stuckness, or congestion, allowing free movement & circulation of the vital flows (Blood, Qi, Lymph). Gua Sha can even be done over your clothes, without oils, so this may suit some.
During your consultation we will see if Gua Sha can be used as a stand alone therapy or if it should be combined with a Therapeutic Massage, with your consent of course.
